Confused Flour Beetle
Latin Name: Tribolium confusum
What are confused flour beetles?
Confused flour beetles are common pantry pests that can infest homes, restaurants, grocery stores, food storage areas, and food processing facilities. They are often found in flour and other loose dry goods where females lay their eggs.
Adult confused flour beetles are shiny reddish-brown and grow to about 1/8 of an inch long. They have ridged wing covers and antennae that gradually widen from the base. Although they have wings, confused flour beetles do not fly. Their larvae are yellowish-white, thin, and worm-like, usually growing between 1/8 and 1/4 of an inch long.
Where will I find confused flour beetles?
Confused flour beetles are usually found where dry food products are stored. In homes, infestations often occur in kitchens, pantries, basements, cabinets, and other storage areas.
They commonly feed on flour, cereal, cornmeal, seeds, dry pet food, spices, and similar pantry products. They prefer dry goods with a higher moisture content and are unable to feed on whole kernels.
Adults may also be seen near windowsills, indoor lights, or outdoor lighting, especially if they entered from outside.
Why do I have a confused flour beetle problem?
Confused flour beetles are often brought into homes inside dry goods that were already infested with eggs or larvae before purchase. They may also be introduced through damaged packaging or bulk food items.
Adult beetles can also enter from outside through gaps around windows and doors, especially when attracted to exterior lights. Once inside, they can spread to other pantry items if food is not stored in sealed containers.
Are confused flour beetles dangerous?
Confused flour beetles are not known to bite or sting, but they can contaminate food. Their saliva, droppings, shed skins, eggs, and larvae can make pantry products unsafe or unpleasant to use.
Infested foods may also develop a bad odor or taste. Any food products showing signs of infestation should be thrown away to prevent the problem from spreading.
How can I help prevent confused flour beetles?
To help prevent confused flour beetles, inspect food packaging for holes, tears, or damage before buying it. Avoid purchasing dry goods from bulk bins when possible, since these products may be more exposed to pests.
At home, remove dry goods from their original packaging and store them in airtight containers. Regularly clean pantry shelves, cabinets, and storage areas to remove crumbs, spilled flour, and food debris.
You can also help keep adult beetles from entering by repairing damaged screens, adding weatherstripping around doors and windows, and replacing white outdoor lights with yellow lights or LED lights that are less attractive to insects.
How do I get rid of confused flour beetles?
The first step is to find and remove the source of the infestation. Check flour, cereal, cornmeal, spices, dry pet food, seeds, and other stored goods. Throw away any infested items in a sealed bag and clean the storage area thoroughly.
Because pantry pests can spread to multiple products and hide in cracks or shelf edges, professional pest control can help locate the source, treat problem areas, and reduce the chance of the beetles returning.
